Deciphering The Labels On Personal Care Products

Felecia Lewis

If  you are like many people, you are taking your health seriously. Part of this means that you are being careful with the things you put into and onto your body. The ingredient lists found on personal care products can be scary. Luckily, the government requires ingredients to be listed on all cosmetic and hygiene products. However, it can be difficult to decipher what is good for you and what isn't. This is where reading the other labels on the products comes in handy, if you know what the labels mean. Here is some information on understanding these labels.

USDA Organic

In order to be able to use a label stating that the product is certified as USDA Organic is not easy. At least 95 percent of the ingredients must be certified as organic materials. This certification takes a long process and a lot of money to obtain. The USDA must inspect the way the products were made or grown, including regular inspections on farms and factories.

Made With Organics

When a product cannot meet the strict requirements of USDA Organic certification, but are still made with a number of organic ingredients, these products may carry the NSF label of "Made with Organics." Of course, you are not sure which ingredients are organic, or how many of them are, but at least the manufacturer is trying to provide safe personal care products for consumers.

Natural

The natural label can be almost as difficult to get as a USDA Organic label. In order to be consider a "natural" product, it must meet these standards:

  • Contain at least 95 percent natural ingredients
  • Be manufactured in a manner that does not affect the purity of the ingredients
  • Must not contain items known to be harmful to humans
  • May not have been tested on animals
  • Must be comprised or biodegradable ingredients
  • Must have eco-friendly packaging

While natural products may not be organic, you can be sure they are safe to use.

When it comes down to it, you are the only person who can decide what you demand of your personal care product manufacturing. As you look over the labels, consider why you are being so particular. USDA Organic products are going to be harder to find, and may be more expensive. However, you can be sure the products will be without added chemicals. Preservatives may be present and make up the 5 percent that is not organic. Pay attention to these and look for ones that are natural to get the safest products possible.
