First-Timer Tips For Eyelash Extensions

Felecia Lewis

Getting eyelash extensions for the first time can be so exciting! You probably can't wait to be free from using mascara and to look in the mirror and see your big, fluffy eyelashes all the time. But before you start reveling in your new, beautiful lashes, there are a few tips you should know as a first-time eyelash extension customer.

Say "yes" to a patch test

There are various glues and preparations used to attach the eyelash extensions to your natural lashes. While it is somewhat rare for people to be allergic to these compounds, allergies and reactions can happen. So most eyelash stylists will require their customers to come in for a patch test before their main appointment. During this test, your stylist will just apply a few lashes. They'll then have you wait at least 24 hours to make sure you don't react before applying the rest of the lashes. If your stylist makes a patch test optional, definitely say "yes." You don't want two red, irritated eyes to make your first lash session miserable.

Don't wear makeup to your appointment

You might be tempted to spend time dolling yourself up so you can look your best for your lash appointment. But as soon as you're there, your eyelash technician will have to wash all of your makeup off. They can't risk having it transfer to your lashes and prevent the lash glue from doing its job. Remove all of your makeup before your appointment, and make sure you use a good-quality makeup remover so you get all the traces off.

Be prepared to sit still for 2 - 3 hours

Applying a full set of eyelash extensions usually takes about two hours. If you're getting volume lashes, or if you have really thin natural lashes, your appointment might take a little longer. Before you sit down in the technician's chair, make sure you use the bathroom, have a snack, and do anything else necessary to prepare yourself for a long session.

Have an idea of what you want

There's a lot that a stylist can do with lashes. They can make them thicker on the outside or on the inside. They can add some longer lashes here and there. Look at some photos prior to your appointment to try and get an idea of what you like and what you want. This way, you can better communicate with your stylist and be happier with your results.

Getting eyelash extensions for the first time can be so much fun! Stick to the tips above for best results. Contact a local eyelash extension service to learn more.
